Cusco and its outskirts

Archaeologically speaking, the city of Cusco transmits a feeling of living in another era since the mixture of country and city life is palpable.

We will begin our journey at the archaeological sites of Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Pukapukara and Tambomachay.  They are the closest archaeological remains to the city.  They will transport us to the Inca Era.  We will also visit the Cathedral in Cusco where you will see a number of paintings, legacy of colony mestizo masters.  At the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun, you’ll see evidence of how the Spaniards utilized the Inca palace foundations and carved stones from the Temple of the Sun, to erect Religious buildings.

Will start the visit with the very well-known Saqsaywaman fortress famous by its megalithic constructions in which the Incas demonstrated their power and elegance. We will continue with the amphitheatre of Qenqo, the Pukapukara fortress and Tambomachay archaeological sites.

Pre-Colombian Art Museum (MAP)

Visit the only Peruvian museum dedicated to highlighting art from ancient Peruvian cultures.  The Cabrera house is the headquarters of the Pre-Columbian Art Museum.  It is located in one of the best sectors of Cusco city, the Nazarenas Small Square, one block up street from the Main Central Square.   

We will end the visit with a lunch or dinner at the Pre-Colombian Art Museum Restaurant (Optional).

Inca Museum and Archbishop Palace

On of the most important features are the funerary bundles and mummies in a good state of conservation as well as Incan remains of great importance.  This museum will give us a graphic picture of every day life in the Andes. 

Later, the Archbishop Palace is a necessary stop; there the beauty of the Cusquenian School of Art which was founded by Italian, Bernardo Vitti, can be contemplated.

Churches and Convents

Merced Convent and The Society of Jesus Church

The Society of Jesus church, houses an invaluable collection of paintings from the Cusqueña School that decorates its walls.

At La Merced Convent, the well-known Merced custody shows its magnificence, it is indeed one of the most valuable jewels of colonial Cusco.

Santo Domingo Convent and Cathedral

The Santo Domingo convent was constructed over the most important monument of the Inca Era, the Koricancha or Temple of The Sun.  The most surprising aspect is the perfection of the finishing and the structures of this Incan temple achieved by the native sculptors and builders. 

The Basilica Cathedral of Cusco is one the most important structures of the city.  Not only because it is the icon of the catholic church but because of its beauty and splendour.  It has three independent churches of incomparable magnificence.

San Blas

We will take a visit to the famed neighborhood of San Blas, the artist’s quarter.  It is a place where all art flows in a harmonious environment which invites the visitor to admire the delicate work of Cusqueñen artists.

The visit includes the entrance to the San Blas Church where one of the largest jewels of the colonial art of the continent can be found: the San Blas Pulpit.  Filigree made of cedar by expert hands in the use of gubia.

Shopping in Cusco

A magnificent opportunity to roam the artist and shopping centers throughout the city to acquire high quality Peruvian products.

Typical Markets and Inca Remains: Chinchero or Pisaq

As leaving Cusco behind, we will cross diverse landscapes along the way before touring the most well-known markets in Cusco.  They are familiar not only for the diversity of arts and crafts work but also because you can observe one of the oldest way of commerce “the barter of goods” or exchange of arts and crafts.         

The best days to visit the Pisaq market are Tuesdays, Thursdays and especially Sundays.  Here you will hear Quechua, or the people’s tongue, spoken as you would have in Inca times./ Chinchero market open only on sundays.

FULL DAY TOURS

Sacred Valley

After breakfast, you will be collected from your hotel and head for the breath-taking Sacred Valley. Our first stop will be Pisaq, where you will have the chance to see and browse its colourful and traditional arts and crafts market. Next stop: the town of Urubamba, where you’ll stop over for a delicious outdoor buffet lunch in a country side restaurant.  After lunch you’ll ride until the ancient Inca village of Ollantaytambo, which still conserves its Inca architecture, water canals and agricultural terraces. 

Return to Cusco through the scenic Urubamba Valley and stop in the town of Chincheros which was constructed over an important Inca centre around 1400 AD.

Andahuaylillas and Pikillacta

In morning time, you will be collected at your hotel for your excursion to eastern Cusco. For starters, we’ll have Tipon, appreciated for an impressive and out of its time hydraulic technology used then and now for agricultural purposes. 

Our next stop will be Pikillacta, 33 kilometres away from Cusco, built around 700 to 1000 B.C.  It is believed it was a storage facility for grains and seeds.  We will also visit the Andahuaylillas Church, considered the Sistine Chapel in America because of a series of fine art ceiling paintings.

Maras and Moray

We will visit Maras, its colonial church and estates with heraldic facades and emblems.
The majority of the population lives from the exploitation of its salt mines.  Since Pre-Colombian Times salt has been used as currency, a means of commercial exchange.

In Moray a series of channels placed in concentric circles were apparently reserved for agricultural research and experiments on crops at different altitudes. 

At the end of the tour will enjoy a delicious lunch at the Hacienda Huayoccari.

Ollantaytambo, Maras & Moray

It is a complete excursion to admire the cultural, natural and architectural arrival of the Incas; where nature and culture intertwine.  We will visit the best preserved Incan town of Ollantaytambo, where the people still keeps their ancestral customs.  Besides visiting Maras and its salt mines we will also stop at the Incan experimental center of Moray.

Rafting on the Sacred River of the Incas

Trek to Huchuyqosqo

This day we will descend from the town of Chincheros by the hill to the only Incan citadel where we will find Incan constructions up to three levels.  It has channels, streets and square.  We will continue while watching beautiful birds and spectacular snow-peaks on the trail.  This spectacular Inca site was constructed especially by Inca Viracocha (son of the Sun) for his last days of calm and rest. 

One of the appeals of this long walk is the diversity of flora and fauna one will find along the way.  Also appreciate the spectacular Andean geography drawn in the stunning mountain range where we can observe the Pitusiray and Sahuasiray Gods.

Machu Picchu

Only hearing its name reminds us of Peru and its greatness; a mythical way lead us to one of the new Seven Wonders of the World the famous Machupicchu.   

A sacred place constructed in a remote area.  In order to arrive one should journey on a pilgrimage for the soul and body.  A sanctuary declared Cultural Patrimony of Humankind by UNESCO since 1983.  Not to mention it also posses abundant exotic flora and species of fauna.

Itinerary:
We will arrive at the train station to board the train that will take us to the town of Aguas Calientes.  We will get on a bus that will take us up to the MachuPicchu Sanctuary.  Then our guided tour will last for approximately three hours.  At the end of our tour we will have a delicious buffet lunch at the Hotel Sanctuary Lodge.  You will then be transported to  Aguas Calientes Train Station and return to Cusco city.
